The department does not admit students from outside JHU who intend to work only for an M.A. However, it does offer this degree as an intermediate step toward the Ph.D. or as a final degree to some of those who do not complete their doctoral work. It is also offered to accelerated B.A. students. Beyond the general University requirements, the department requires for the master's degree either two years of satisfactory graduate course work or one year of satisfactory graduate course work and an acceptable master's essay.

Applicants should have a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (paper test), 250 (computer test), or 100 (Internet-based test). Applicants taking the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) should have minimum sub-scores of 26 (Reading), 26 (Listening), 22 (Writing) and 25 (Speaking). International students with SAT Critical Reading scores of 670 or higher are exempt from the TOEFL requirement. For the IELTS, applicants seeking admission will preferably have an academic Band Score equal to 7.

Students should submit the completed application online. The non-refundable application fee is $75 (Payment may be made online via Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or E-check). In addition to this, they must submit official transcripts of all college and university study in sealed envelopes, letters of recommendation, Statement of Purpose, Samples of Work, Statement of Financial Resources and recent GRE scores. Applicants whose native language is not English must submit proof of their proficiency in English (original TOEFL or IELTS scores) before they can be offered admissions and before a visa certificate can be issued. Applicants need to indicate a need for financial assistance on the electronic application for admission.
