"The Department of Geography offers both thesis and non-thesis M.A. degree programs. For the thesis track, students must complete a minimum of 65 credit hours of graduate study. Students pursuing the thesis option must complete a minimum of ten courses, eight of which must be in Geography. Students must also successfully defend both the thesis proposal and the completed thesis. Students following the non-thesis option must complete a minimum of fifteen courses, ten of which must be in geography. Non-thesis students must develop a program of study that covers three areas. The areas must include at least one systematic and two techniques or two systematic and one technique. Systematic areas include specializations within human, physical, environmental and area studies, while the technique areas include GIS, remote sensing, cartography and quantitative methods. The degree is completed by passing a three-part comprehensive written examination. Non-thesis students must complete a minimum of 75 credit hours of graduate study, 50 of which must be in Geography.

Scores of Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the English Test of the University of Michigan English Language Institute. Must be submitted. The minimum TOEFL score should be 620 (written), 260 (computer), or 105 internet).
