The program offers three areas of course specialization: physical-environmental geography (human impact on the environment); urban-economic geography (urban studies, demography-market analysis, location problems); and Geographic Information Systems (GIS- remote sensing). Geography also currently offers a number of introductory and advanced regional courses dealing with Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America for students interested in area studies.

A minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 (out of 4.00) or foreign equivalent, as determined by the admitting department. Students can prove English proficiency in a number of ways at the undergraduate level. Most students fulfill the English requirement by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Most undergraduate programs require the following minimum scores: 515 (Toefl paper-based test), or 187 (Toefl computer-based test), or 66 (Toefl Internet-based test), or Ielts overall band score of 5.5. The colleges of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), Business and Engineering require higher TOEFL scores, as follows: 550 (TOEFL paper-based test), or 213 (TOEFL computer-based test), or 79 (TOEFL internet-based test), or IELTS overall band score of 6.0.Students should take Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) to qualify for certain programs and scholarships.

Application form should be filled online. Paper applications are not available for graduate programs. An application fee of $100. Undergraduate applicants apply through the Office of Admissions, following the instructions and guidelines on the web site. At the undergraduate level, students can apply online or with a paper application. Online applications require the application fee to be paid by credit card. If students fill out the online application and do not pay by credit card, the application will not be received by the Admissions Office. If students do not have a credit card, they must use a paper-based application. Photocopies of original documents must have the signature of the registrar and the seal of the issuing institution. The signature must be original and the seal must be embossed in the photocopy. The transcript must include a list of the courses you have completed and the marks attained for every class for each of your 4 years of study prior to graduation from high school. A statement of purpose is extremely important, especially for financial aid. The essay gives the admitting department a chance to see what kind of student they may be inviting into their program. Many professors evaluate interested students by considering whether or not the applicant could be a future peer. It is important to have someone else review the statement of purpose before sending it with the application. Punctuation, grammar and spelling, as well as overall content, are extremely important. UC requires official transcripts, translated into English, from all secondary schools attended and for university studies students have completed or are currently engaged in. Students should submit TOEFL; IELTS score reports with the application form.
