This program encourages discourse, research and critical investigation into design issues. It is a place in which students are encouraged to push their expectations and perception of not only the field of design, but also their role in that field. The first 2-years are spent in classes exploring various concepts and models relevant to the field of visual communications. In the third year of study, students are responsible for developing, executing and defending a thesis project. Along with other School of Art MFA candidates, these projects culminate in an exhibit at the School of Art’s Ewing Gallery.

Applicants must have an undergraduate major in art, or equivalent proficiency. Applicants must have earned a minimum of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or other equivalent to a 'B' average. If student have completed previous graduate course work, they must have a grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4-point scale or equivalent. Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take and pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Passing marks are 550 for paper-based test, 213 for computer-based test or 80 for internet-based test (iBT) with a minimum score of 20 in each sub-section. Passing marks for the IELTS are 6.5. Official scores must be received directly from the Educational Testing Service.

To apply for admission, an international applicant must submit the following items directly to: The Office of Graduate and International Admissions, 201 Student Services Building, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee 37996: Completed Application for Admission Form using students name as it appears on all official documents.; non-refundable application fee. Payment should be made in United States dollars by either a cashier's check, money order, or a personal check payable to the University of Tennessee. If payment is by personal check, the check must be drawn on a United States bank to be honored in U.S. currency. Checks drawn on overseas banks are not accepted. International money orders are suggested. Attach fee with application. If fee is not attached, the application will not be processed; Official or attested university records, with certified translations if the records are not in English. Notarized copies are not considered official; TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score for any applicant whose native language is not English; Documented evidence of financial resources; GRE or GMAT scores must be officially reported by the testing organization.
