The interior design curriculum is a rigorous course of study which combines technical courses, design studio courses, humanities, and a wide choice of electives. Through coursework and field study experiences, students develop specialized problem solving skills and knowledge for the analysis, planning and design of interior architectural environments. They apply the use of lighting, color, mechanical systems, and furnishings as they design spaces for both residential and commercial settings.

Freshman admission decisions are based on the following elements: Completion of the 14 required core academic subjects: 4 units of English, 3 units of mathematics (2 units of algebra plus 1 of advanced math, trigonometry, geometry, or calculus), 2 units of natural science (including at least 1 unit of biology, chem-istry, or physics), 2 units of a single foreign language, 1 unit of American History, 1 unit of European history, world history, or world geography, 1 unit of visual or performing arts, A core GPA that is computed based on the 14 units listed above. Note: Course grades in these core academic subjects are weighted by UT to reflect enrollment in any of the following: Advanced Placement (AP): +1 point, International Baccalaureate (IB): +1 point, Honors: +.5 point, College Dual Enrollment: +.5 point, Standardized test scores (SAT or ACT). UT uses the standard ACT exam, without essay, and the critical reading and mathematics sub scores from the SAT exam for admission decisions. Other important factors include the Personal Statement, where an applicant provides further information that may, for example, address the applicants potential for success in college. Students should demonstrate English proficiency if native language is not English. This can be done in one of the following ways: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 523 on the paper-based test, 193 on the computer-based test, or 70 on the internet-based (iBT). Two semesters or three quarters of college-level English composition with a grade of C or better at an accredited college or university in the United States. ACT (English sub-score of 21 is required) or SAT (verbal score of 510 is required) for U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents. Scores must be received from the Educational Testing Service (copies are not acceptable). IELTS - a minimum score of 6.5. Completion of the University of Tennessee English Language Institutes (ELI).

Students should fill an online or paper application form. They can refer to the print or on-line application for current fee amounts. An additional fee is required if applying for student housing. Credit card or electronic check payment is required for the online application. An international money order (payable on a US bank) or other paper payment can be made only if the applicant is submitting a paper application. This application must be accompanied by the $30 admission application fee, in the form of a check or money order payable to the University of Tennessee. The application packet should contain: Official records and transcripts of all previous academic work. These must reflect all courses taken. Students must submit an official English translation. An official from the educational institution must certify all copies as true copies. Notarized copies are not acceptable. All F-1 and J-1 visa status students must submit financial documentation. Financial documentation must include a completed Financial Support Statement and an official bank statement reflecting a balance of at least $30645 USD that is dated within the last six months. If government is sponsoring, students must submit an official letter from the government stating that they will cover all expenses during academic studies at The University of Tennessee. All international students must declare a specific major. Ensure that all documents are postmarked by the priority filing dates. TOEFL SAT and IELTS score reports should be submitted.
