The Master of Interior Design (MID) educates students to become professionals in practice, to engage in research, and to develop a specialization in the design of the built environment. In addition to coursework, the main requirement for the MID degree is a written thesis with a research component. A specialized design project may comprise a portion of the written thesis. The Master of Interior Design Program accepts students with prior educational experience from any field. Each student entering the MID program works with the graduate coordinator to evaluate his or her unique background and to determine the specific courses needed to strengthen the student’s educational foundation and interests. After assessment of previous coursework and design work, leveling courses may be required to prepare the student for graduate studies. Thus, the estimated credit hours and length of study time vary according to each student’s individual baccalaureate degree and experience.

Minimum requirements include a bachelor's degree or Master's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or a comparable degree from an international institution, a minimum grade average of B for all upper-division undergraduate work and scores that are acceptable for the program to which students are applying. They must also have acceptable scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Students should contact the academic unit for specific program criteria, which will require them to submit such items as transcripts, recommendation letters, and more. International applicants should submit the English proficiency test scores (i.e.) TOEFL or IELTS.

All applications to the University of Florida should be submitted online; printed applications are no longer available. Submission of the $30 nonrefundable application fee by credit card (via the online application; a $1.75 service fee will be added automatically to the $30 fee, so the total application fee is $31.75) or mail to the Office of Admissions. Students should arrange to have official transcripts sent to the Office of Admissions from each postsecondary institution attended. Letters of Recommendation; Application for Fellowship or Assistantship; Statement of Purpose; Copies of all transcripts and test scores should be mailed to the academic unit.
